How this works

A Florida notice of violation usually gives a time to correct, either as a number of days or as a compliance date. The checker turns that into a date, counts the calendar days from today, and spreads the steps that usually have to happen before it across the time you have: talking to the inspector, a licensed contractor looking at the work, permit applications if a permit is needed, the work itself, and the reinspection.

If you have a hearing or reinspection date, add it and the plan works around it. The target dates are suggestions to keep the work on track. The dates printed on your notice, and on any order, are the ones that count.

It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It is general information about how code enforcement usually works in Florida, not legal advice. Your notice, your city or county’s code and the code office named on the notice are what count. For legal questions, talk to a Florida attorney.

Questions people ask

How long do I have to fix a code violation in Florida?
It depends on the notice. Chapter 162 of the Florida Statutes generally calls for a reasonable time to correct, and the notice states it, either as a number of days or as a compliance date. Some cases, such as a repeat violation, may not be given a new time to correct. Go by your notice, and ask the inspector if it's unclear.
Are the days on my notice calendar days or business days?
Notices differ. This checker counts calendar days from the date on the notice. If your notice says business days, counts from the day you received it, or the date lands on a weekend or holiday, ask the code office named on the notice which date counts.
What happens if the violation isn't corrected by the compliance date?
The case can go to a hearing before a code enforcement board or special magistrate. If the violation is found, an order can set a fine for each day it continues past the date in the order, in an amount the order states.
Can I get more time?
Some code offices will consider a request, for example when a permit application is in or a contractor is booked. That decision is theirs, and nothing here can promise it. Ask the inspector before the date passes, and keep a written record of the answer.
How much will the fine be?
This checker doesn't work out fines. Any fine amount is set by your city's order and is printed on the order itself. For questions about a fine, ask the code office named on the notice, or a Florida attorney for legal questions.
Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?
No. The dates are worked out in your browser, and the calendar file is created on your own device.
